Lit Only By Fire was inspired by a love of human history and accomplishment. In ages past, mankind had a self sufficiency which has been lost due to the wide availability and relative inexpensiveness of modern products and the globalization introduced by the internet. This organization is an opportunity for those with the interest, to look back through time to study and partake in the skills and knowledge which has been largely forgotten. Even up until the turn of the 20th Century, humans had an ability to not only survive, but thrive without the accoutrements that so many people in developed nations assume are indispensable in the modern world. Potters made the cooking utensils and everyday wares used to cook, clean, and contain. Metal workers, toiling over the hot fire of their forge or foundry, created not only essential tools and parts, but art that even into the modern day, cannot be rivaled using the techniques available to those craftsmen. Carpenters and woodcraft accomplished astonishing feats in days gone by using nothing but the barest essential hand tools, either created by the artisan himself or made by another, and a few simple machines. And finally, everyone from the housewife to the aristocrat was armed with the knowledge of basic geography, orienteering and survival when out of their home, village or city. ﷯These are the skills we wish to revive here. We are not re-enactors, although they will likely find our classes informative. No, we just have a simple desire to work with our hands to gain an understanding of the reality of creating with our own hands, and to pass that knowledge and learning on to you. To that end, we here at Lit Only By Fire offer articles, classes and a store for those who would like to learn and cultivate those skills in an environment of encouragement and with the aid of experts in those fields. So let us take you back in time, where if you didn’t have it, you had at least the skills and knowledge to make it yourself. Foundry burning impurities out of coal before firing up for smelting
