Lit Only By Fire
Pottery is one of the oldest skills that we know of. There are several reasons for this. One, its products have some of the most practical and mundane uses. This is to such a point that ancient dumps can be established solely upon the levels of potsherds found in one central location. For another, pottery, like glass does not degrade over time. Pottery that was buried some 2,500 years ago, in some instances, still bears it original glaze colors on its surface, or the fingerprints of the pottery are eternally fired into its earthen surface. ﷯At Lit Only By Fire we have spent years studying history to determine what knowledge man had of pottery that we simply have lost in our industrialized age. Ancient Central Americans could build massive vessels that would rival the best made wheel thrown pots. Except those were made by laying coils one atop another in much the way a modern 3D printer would deposit filament. The ancient Chinese knew their craft and materials so well that they managed to build a life sized army complete with horses chariots and thousands of individual soldiers in such a manner that they survived for thousands of years buried with their king, Qin Shi Huang. We simply aim to revive a small fraction of these abilities in techniques utilizing our classroom and pottery workshop. In doing so, we are continuing a tradition that has existed since time began. Making your own pottery and using it is something that really needs to be experienced and gives you a great appreciation Pottery
